"Many receive advice, only the wise profit from it." Harper Lee

Nelle Harper Lee once received a gift of a year's wages from her
friends Michael and Joy Brown so that she could pursue her dream of
writing. During this period, she wrote "To Kill A Mockingbird" which,
when published, became an instant bestseller.

  1. Wow, it became an *instant* bestseller? That's very unusual. Usually, literature and art do not become well known or appreciated until after the author dies. Was Harper Lee well known as an author before writing "To Kill a Mockingbird"?

  2. Not as an author. She didn't truly begin her writing career until she wrote "To Kill a Mockingbird" because she couldn't afford to write full time.
